Abbate erhielt posthum die Medaille für seine Handlungen, die er am 14. Oktober 2010 in Sangin, Afghanistan, während seines Einsatzes als Scharfschütze bei der Kompanie K, 3. Bataillon, 5. Marineinfanterie, 1. Marinedivision, unternahm. Abbate wurde später in diesem Jahr in der Provinz Helmand getötet.
