Das Rekrut Training Regiment hielt am 25. Mai auf dem Shepherd Field an Bord des Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego eine Zeremonie zum Kommandowechsel für Oberst Robert W. Gates ab. Oberst Michael J. Lee übernahm Gates als kommandierender Offizier des Regiments. Dudelsackklänge spielten "Scotland the Brave" für Gates, bevor die Zeremonie begann. Lee ergriff das Mikrofon und sprach für kurze Zeit, ohne Gates "Donner stehlen zu wollen. "Ich freue mich auf die Gelegenheit, dieses feine Regiment zu führen, und ich mache mir absolut keine Illusionen über den Offizier, den ich ablöse, ich weiß, dass ich sehr große Schuhe zu füllen habe".
