Das Schneiden von Porträts, meist im Profil, aus schwarzen Karten wurde Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts populär, obwohl der Begriff Silhouette bis in die frühen Jahrzehnte des 19. Jahrhunderts selten verwendet wurde und die Tradition unter diesem Namen bis ins 21. Jahrhundert fortgeführt wurde.
