U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologists and environmental contaminants staff are actively documenting wildlife and natural resource impacts at the #RefugioOilResponse by surveying the beaches and surrounding areas as part of the Natural Resources Damage Assessment Program. We are also supporting the California Department of Fish and Wildlife Service in their efforts to locate and recover oiled wildlife.
All wildlife recovery and rehabilitation efforts must be carried out by trained professionals for the safety of both people and wildlife. We want to stress that members of the public do not under any circumstances attempt to rescue or recover wildlife that appears to be oiled. The public are encouraged to report observations of oiled wildlife to the Oiled Wildlife Care Network at 877 823 6926.
