Avraham Soskin (1881-1963) was indeed a remarkable Russian-Israeli photographer, known for his significant contributions to the field of photography in both Russia and Israel. Born in 1881 in what is now Belarus, Soskin immigrated to Ottoman Palestine in 1904. He settled in Jaffa (now part of Tel Aviv), where he opened a photography studio. Soskin's work focused on documenting life in early 20th century Palestine, capturing scenes of daily life, landscapes and important events. One of Soskin's most famous photographs is 'The First Siren', taken in 1948 during the Israeli War of Independence. The image shows a young boy standing next to a palm tree, listening to the sound of a siren warning of impending danger. It has become an iconic representation of the struggles faced by Israelis at the time. Soskin's photographs provide valuable historical documentation of the transformation of the region during the early years of Israeli statehood. His work is celebrated for its artistic quality and its ability to convey the human experience in the midst of significant political and social change. Throughout his career, Soskin's photographs were exhibited internationally, and his legacy continues to be recognised in both Russia and Israel for his contributions to the art of photography.
