633 D Street, Northwest (Commercial Building), Washington, District of Columbia, DC
Summary
Significance: This small, modest building typifies the small-scale development which characterized much of late-nineteenth century Washington. The combination of ground floor shops with living quarters above was a common one until the middle of the twentieth century. The brick work and entablature detailing illustrate the aspiration to classically inspired elegance, executed in common materials, which was also a prevalent feature of contemporary architecture in the district area. While not architecturally distinguished, the building comprises part of the row of similar commercial structures which characterize this section of D Street. The well executed cornice detailing is similar to that of the nearby 641 building and others along this street.
