268 OHIO BIOLOGICAL SURVEY As noniially developed this association is always confined to a nar- row strip a meter or two wide bordering on the water. But it is one of the associations which have become greatly extended since the clear- ing of the country. In the cleared lands, however, it does not develop in its purity, but becomes a meadow covered with Panicum latifolium, together with various sedges, rushes, and other common meadow and pasture plants.
