Then all the menbut Aa-ron took back their rods, and God saidAa-rons rod should stay in the tent for all timeas a proof of his right to be high priest. A long time went by, and when we next geta glimpse of thechil-dren of Is-ra-el they had beenin the wild tract and vast sand plains near twoscore years. We do not know what they did allthese years, but God took care of them and gavethem clothes and food and drink as they wentfrom place to place. At last they came back toKa-desh, and there Mir-i-am died; and there thetribes once more found fault with Mo-ses andsaid he ought not to have brought them fromE-gypt to this poor place where there were nofigs nor grapes, and where, though they hadgreat thirst, there was no spring nor stream ofwhich they might drink. Then Mo-ses and Aa-ron went to the tent toask help of the Lord, and he bade Mo-ses takethe rod (Aa-rons rod that was kept in the tent)and call the folks to him and speak to the rock

56 A CHILDS STORY OF THE BIBLE. in their sight so that a stream might come out oiit and the men and beasts might drink of it. Now Mo-ses was so wroth with the men thathe spake harsh words to them and smote therock twice, which was not what God bade him todo. He was told to speak to the rock but hewas mad and struck it twice with the rod. Astream came from it and the men and beasts hadas much as they could drink, but the Lord wasnot pleased with Mo-ses and Aa-ron and saidsince they had not done just what he told themto do they should not lead the people to theLand of Promise. When they came to Mount Hor, God saidAa-ron must die there, and he bade Mo-ses andAa-ron and his son, Ele-a-zar go up to the top ofthe mount, so that Aa-ron might take a last lookat the camp and get a view of the PromisedLand ere he died. Then he told Mo-ses to stripAa-ron of his priests robe and put it on his son,who was now to be high priest. Aa-ron died onthe mount and Mo-ses and Ele-a-zar went backto the camp
