NEW YORK 939 country seats. At the upper end are seen thespires of the city; and in the distance the boldprecipitous banks of the Hudson. From NewYork to the bar between Sandy Hook Point andSchryers Island (the division between the outerbay or harbour and the Atlantic) is about 17miles. Fortifications have been erected at theNarrows, Governors Island, and other places, forthe defence of the city and shipping. Theaccompanying plan represents the city and bay ofNew York, and the surrounding country. The Hudson river was first explored in 1609,by the famous English navigator whose name itbears, then in the service of the West IndiaCompany of Holland. In 1612, New Amsterdam,now New York, was founded by the Dutch, as aconvenient station for the fur trade. In 1664, itwas taken by the English. The Dutch againrecovered possession of it in 1673; but it wasretaken by the English in the following year, andcontinued in their occupation till the terminationof the revolutionary war.
