A German Cruiser leaving Dublin after a courtesy visit!

description

Summary

A German naval ship leaving Dublin after a courtesy visit in 1960 just 15 years after World War II. Dublin was a very different port then and the skyline in the background held many features that have changed or are no longer standing!..Niall McAuley ( /photos/gnmcauley/ ) advises that this is the frigate Graf Spee ( HMS_Flamingo_(L18) ) . (No - not that one - a later one :) ). B-59 ( /photos/66311327@N05/ ) and DannyM8 ( /photos/79549245@N06/ ) suggest a date range in the middle of June (probably around the 10th as this image captures the departure). Danny offers some snippets from newspapers of the time - which document the short visit by two West German training ships - the Graf Spee (F215) and Hipper (F214) ( https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hipper_(F_214) ) . The officers were received at a number of receptions - and the cadets by the local boat clubs :) O'Dea seems to have captured this scene from North Wall Quay, looking SE to Ringsend and Sir John Rogerson's quay (probably around here ( https://www.google.ie/maps/@53.3473486,-6.2364127,3a,75y,140.96h,92.39t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sZ2EiDU6OHoKA3xK8Bg10Aw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en ) ). The MV Murell ( MV_Murell ) looks to be in the background.......Photographer: James P. O'Dea..Collection:James P. O'Dea ( http://catalogue.nli.ie/Collection/vtls000148612 ) ..Date: June 1960 (Possibly 10 June 1960)..NLI Ref.: ODEA 20/73 ( vtls000305030 ) ..You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie ( http://catalogue.nli.ie )

Set of images depicting various harbors, ports, and piers together with ships, fishing and sailing boats, and all types of haven-like places and views. All large image sets on Picryl.com are made in two steps: First, we picked a set to train AI vision to recognize the feature, and after that, we ran all 25M+ images in our database through an image recognition machine. As usual, all media in the collection belong to the public domain. There is no limitation on the dataset usage - educational, scientific, or commercial.
