JAVA SEA (Nov. 10, 2010) A Marine assigned to the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (31st MEU) reads a message from Lt. Gen. John Lejeune, the 13th Commandant of the Marine Corps, during a ceremony commemorating the 235th Marine Corps birthday aboard the forward-deployed amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2). Essex is part of the forward-deployed Essex Amphibious Ready Group and is underway in the western Pacific Ocean with the embarked 31st MEU.
