Custer to lieutenant colonel by brevet within the United States Army on August 2, 1866 for gallant and meritorious service at the Battle of Yellow Tavern, Virginia. Custer was commission to this rank from May 11, 1864. The commission certificate is signed by Andrew Johnson the 17th president of the United States, and Edwin M. Stanton, Secretary of War. Assistant adjutant General E.S. Townsend's signature is in upper left-hand corner and date August 2, 1866. Document is in good condition with only a few wrinkles located in upper right-hand corner. It is printed and handwritten in ink on 1 sheet of parchment.
