A Paktika village response unit, or VRU, member provides security during a patrol Jan. 9, 2014, in Sharana city, Sharana district, Paktika province, Afghanistan. During the patrol, VRU members and provincial response company leaders visited with locals and interviewed them about the placement of improvised explosive devices by insurgents.
