en walked back into the forest. It wascomposed of blue gum (Eucalyptus globulus) and stringybark, another Eucalyptus, growing nearly to the same height,but the former far exceeded the latter in circumference. Thebrush, which was green wattle (Mimosa), had been burnt, sothe forest was tolerably open, and the huge white boles ofthe gum-trees shot up as straight as arrows in all directions.They were all large, but did not appear so till we wereclose to them; and, as they were straight, and free frombranches, and the stems were white and smooth, did notlook very old. They showed none of the signs which wein England generally associate with age in a tree, no hollow-ness or rugged bark, no massive limbs or gnarled roots,but they shot up clean and taper, with small heads like sap-lings. I took the girths of many of them with a mea-suring tape, and as some had been felled and others blowndown, I took the length, and could judge the others fromthem. GREAT TREES. 269 1. 6 feet in diameter, at 5 feet from the ground, 181 feet to first branches, top about 30 feet; a young tree. 2. 28 feet in circumference, at 5 feet from the ground, about 150 feet to first branches ; a beautiful straight tree. 3. 27 feet in circumference, at 5 feet from the ground, would square 4 feet at 130 feet. 4. 27 feet in circumference, at 5 feet from the ground, would square 2 feet 6 inches at 200 feet; a quitestraight tree. 5. 21 feet in circumference, at 5 feet from the ground, would square 4 feet at 100 feet. 6. 194 feet high. 7. 9 feet in diameter, 159 feet to the first branches, about 200 altogether. 8. 29 feet in circumference, at 5 feet from the ground, upwards of 200 feet high, but rather lumpy. 9. 37 feet in circumference, at 5 feet from the ground, full of buttresses, and did not measure fair.
