en walked back into the forest. It wascomposed of blue gum (Eucalyptus globulus) and stringybark, another Eucalyptus, growing nearly to the same height, but the former far exceeded the latter in circumference. Thebrush, which was green wattle (Mimosa), had been burnt, sothe forest was tolerably open, and the huge white boles ofthe gum-trees shot up as straight as arrows in all directions. They were all large, but did not appear so till we wereclose to them; and, as they were straight, and free frombranches, and the stems were white and smooth, did notlook very old. They showed none of the signs which wein England generally associate with age in a tree, no hollow-ness or rugged bark, no massive limbs or gnarled roots, but they shot up clean and taper, with small heads like sap-lings.
