Summary
Pacific Ocean (Mar. 14, 2003) A T-45C Goshawk recieves the launch signal from a 'shooter' on the flight deck aboard USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74). Goshawks are used for both intermediate and advanced portions of both the Navy and Marine Corps pilot training programs for carrier aviation and tactical strike-mission instruction. Carrier qualifications are normally conducted on Atlantic-based carriers within close range of the Meridian, Miss. training facility. However, the Navy was forced to move T-45 pilot qualifications to the Pacific due to the deployment of Atlantic fleet carriers to the Arabian Gulf. Aircraft carriers are warships that act as airbases for carrier-based aircraft. In the United States Navy, these consist of ships commissioned with hull classification symbols CV (aircraft carrier), CVA (attack aircraft carrier), CVB (large aircraft carrier), CVL (light aircraft carrier), CVN (aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion) and CVAN (attack aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion). The first aircraft carrier commissioned into the United States Navy was USS Langley (CV-1) on 20 March 1922.
