A Whalebone Welcome - National Parks Gallery
Summary
The 1868 Captain Edward Penniman House was home to a successful whaling captain. Its Second Empire architecture, bold colors, ornate features, and indoor plumbing made it an unusual building in Eastham in the late 1800s. Its whalebone gate is typical of places around the world where whaling was prevalent. The house is open for tours from spring through fall. It was recently repainted through a Centennial partnership between the National Park Service, Friends of the Cape Cod National Seashore, and Eastern National.
