^:^,^%W;^: WINFIULD SCOTT was the Lieutenant-General commanding the United StatesArmy at the beginning of the Civil War, and President Lincoln was in frequent consultationwith him regarding the defenses of the National Capital. Age was beginning to tell uponthe veteran, however, and he resigned to give way to General AlcClellan, who succeededhim in November, 1861. President Lincoln had much faith in General Scotts sagacity.General Scott was a Virginian, born in 1786, was the hero of the Mexican War, stood bythe Union, and died in 1866. He was captain of artillery in the War of 1812. (333)

He was born in Tennes.see in 1801,and fought in the War of 1812 on the Essex, a vessel commanded by his father. TheAdmiral died in 1870. after having been in the service more than sixty years. (334)
