The hour of triumph called out the character-istic impulses of his nature. The opposition withinthe Union party had stung him to the quick. Nowhe had his opponents before him, baffled andhumiliated. Not a moment did he lose to stretchout the hand of friendship to all. Now that theelection is over, he said, in response to a serenade,may not all, having a common interest, reunite ina common effort to save our common country?For my own part, I have striven, and will strive, toplace no obstacle in the way. So long as I havebeen here I have not willingly planted a thorn inany mans bosom. While I am deeply sensible to thehigh compliment of a reelection, it adds nothing tomy satisfaction that any other man may be painedor disappointed by the result. May I ask those whowere with me to join with me in the same spirit
