road, midway between the Nor-folk and Weldon railroads, was made impregnableby two strong redoubts by the middle of July.♦ The cavalry in both armies was kept busy inconstant raids. While Sheridan was away on hisraid to Trevilians, Wilson was sent with two divi-sions to destroy, if possible, all three of the rail-roads connecting Richmond with the South. Hestarted on the 22d of June, breaking the Weldonroad at Eeamss Station, destroying thirty miles ofthe Lynchburg road and as much of the Danvilleroad, where the two lines crossed at BurkesvilleJunction. He did not effect this without somekeen fighting with the Confederate cavalry, andwhen, the object of his expedition being accom-plished, he started to return, a heavy concentra-tion of the enemys cavalry was effected againsthim.
