American bison in a field, Grand Teton National Park, 2014.
Summary
American bison (Bison bison) are also known as the American buffalo. These large animals once roamed North American grasslands in massive herds. Probably not surprisingly, they nearly went extinct due to commercial hunting, slaughter and introduction of bovine diseases from domestic cattle in the 19th century. The population has made a recent comeback thanks to national parks and reserves.
