American robin (Turdus migratorius) egg, Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site, 2015.
Summary
Widely-distributed throughout North America, it is actually named after the European robin even though the two species aren't very closely related. According to surveys, the American robin is the second most abundant extant (i.e., surviving or still in existence) land bird in North America. It is also one of the earliest bird species to lay eggs, breeding shortly after returning from its winter away.
