An Appeal in Favor of That Class of Americans Called Africans by Lydia Child, Boston African American National Historic Site, 1833.
Summary
In the preface of her book, Lydia Marie Child says, "Reader, I beseech you not to throw down this volume as soon as you have glanced at the title." Written in 1833, Child not only called for the immediate emancipation of African Americans enslaved in the south but also condemned racial prejudice in the northern states. According to the UMASS Amherst Press, this book "provided the abolitionist movement with its first full-scale analysis of race and slavery."
