An Evenings Invitation; with a Wink from the Bagnio (BM 1935,0522.1.186 1)
Summary
Street scene. A fashionably dressed man walks (right to left) between two prostitutes, who have seized him by the shoulders and arm. One (right) hands to a man who lurks behind her a handkerchief she has taken from his pocket. A link-boy walks in front of the party holding his torch downwards. Through the glass panes which fill the upper part of the door of the bagnio (left) a woman smiles and beckons. Over the door is inscribed "WINES". The scene is probably under the piazza in Covent Garden. The women are fashionably dressed. c.January 1773
