Pacific Ocean (Jul. 12, 2004) An F-14D Tomcat from the "Tomcatters" of Fighter Squadron Three One (VF-31) launches from one of four steam driven catapults during night operations on the flight deck aboard the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74). The ship and Carrier Air Wing Fourteen (CVW-14) are taking part in the multi-national maritime exercise "Rim of the Pacific 2004" (RIMPAC). RIMPAC is the largest international maritime exercise in the waters around the Hawaiian Islands. This year's exercise includes seven participating nations; Australia, Canada, Chile, Japan, South Korea, United Kingdom and United States. RIMPAC is intended to enhance the tactical proficiency of participating units in a wide array of combined operations at sea, while enhancing stability in the Pacific Rim region.
