Ludwig Angerer was a prominent Austrian photographer who lived from 1827 to 1879. He is best known for his portraits of notable figures of the mid-19th century, including members of the Austrian imperial family and other European royalty. Born in Vienna in 1827, Angerer began his career as a painter. However, he soon turned to photography and set up his own studio in Vienna in 1850. He quickly gained a reputation for his high quality portraits and was soon sought after by the rich and powerful. Angerer's portraits were characterised by sharp focus, careful composition and attention to detail. He was particularly skilled at capturing the personalities of his subjects, often using pose and lighting to convey their character and mood. Among Angerer's most famous works are his portraits of Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth of Austria. He also photographed other members of the imperial family and prominent members of other European royal houses. In addition to his portrait work, Angerer also produced landscape and architectural photographs. He died in Vienna in 1879, but his legacy as one of Austria's greatest photographers lives on.
