8 feet thick. These weredoubtless the great audience halls of the palace. Thegreat central hall was probably used for all greatceremonies, such as the coronation of the kings, re-turning thanks, and making offerings to the gods forvictories. The kings gate, where Mordecai sat,was doubtless a hall measuring about 100 feet square,with its roof supported by four pillars, and standing150 feet from the northern front of the portico. Theinner court, where Queen Esther appeared to implorethe kings favor, was probably the space between the kings gate and the northern terrace wall. Theroyal house and the house ot the women, it issupposed, were situated behind this great hall, andwere connected with it by a covered bridge over theravine. As the hight of this splendid palace was 120 feet, andstood on a platform over 60 feet high, surrounded bysubordinate palace buildings adorned with trees andshrubs, the whole reflected in the river at its base, theeffect must have been truly grand and imposing.

This was a famous city of Ephraim; about 18miles north by east of Jerusalem, and 10 south ofShechem. The Ark of the Covenant remained herefrom B. c. 1444 to 1116 b, c. In honor of the presenceof the Ark, there was a feast of the Lord in Shilohyearly, in one of which the daughters of Shiloh wereseized by a remnant of the Benjamites. The ruins found here consist of fragments ofcolumns, and large stones of various shapes. Animmense oak, evidently of great age, stands amongthe ruins.
