LECTIONS At one time I made a reputation of a somewhatnovel character. Somehow I seemed to invari-ably make a century whenever I played in a pro-fessionals benefit match. One outcome of thiswas that I was always being asked to play inbenefit matches. When John Lillywhite washaving a benefit at the old Hove Ground atBrighton he asked me to come and play for him.I went down, and when our innings began tookmy place at the wicket to bat. It was a verybright sunny day, and the glare dazzled my eyes.Anyway I was bowled by the first ball. I wentto Lillywhite and told him how sorry I was at myignominious failure. ^^ Never mind, he said.^* Heres a couple of sovereigns. You can havethem, if you agree to give me sixpence for everyrun you make in the second innings. I acceptedhis conditions, put the money in my pocket, andon the next day went in to bat again. Beforestumps were drawn I had made 200 not out,so I went up to Lillywhite and said, ^^ I oweyou £^. Here it is, but if you dont let me off
