am Edward Schirmer, Architect architect, Los Angeles. There is particularinterest in the straightforward designingof the exterior, dominated by a happy dis-position of necessities in a modern mood. Twenty years ago this method was beingtried by a few, using Mediterranean influ-ences. Personally we believe it indicates amethod of union of past and present whichwill produce tomorrow, with finer consid-erations of mass, form, texture, the use ofcolor for its own sake and to enhance form, instead of destroy it. In plan we expect more homes will in-corporate studios, at least a special place foreach members hobby, be it photography, radio, mechanics, electricity, carving, print-ing or other practical avocation. Basementsand attics are yielding their rights to bedull, and even the main rooms are accept-ing collections as livable. RESIDENCE OF THOMAS TELFER, BERKELEYWilliam Edward Schirmer, Architect adult education in schools and clubs. To adegree, special needs are housed by spe-cial furniture, a wise course when built-ins would be useless to the next occupant.Changes occur even in the best regulatedfamilies. We have a right to expect fine work fromthe architects whose work is representedhere, and do expect it, as from many others. The doorways intrigue us and lend respectfor their owners dignity and personality. Each varies with the home type and needs. Our frontispiece from an Honor Awardhouse of 1930, we feel, stands as a symbolalso of the distinction and beauty of thoughtof its departed architect, George Washing-ton Smith. In the Henderson house at Woodside,California, by Gordon Kaufmann, the re-straint, the simple dignity, the discriminat-ing use of brick textures varied by tile-likesizes with wide joints, pleases us beyondwords. What could be more refreshing,
