Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was the keynote speaker at the 2012 ThanksUSA "Treasure Our Troops Gala" at the Newseum in Washington, D.C., on July 14, 2012. ThanksUSA is a non-profit organization that provides two-year, four-year and vocational education scholarships, based upon financial need, to the children and spouses of active-duty military personnel.
