Born in Libourne, France, Atget worked as a sailor, actor and painter before turning to photography in his late 40s. He is best known for his photographs of Parisian architecture and street scenes, which he began taking in the early 1900s. Atget's photographs are characterised by their meticulous attention to detail and documentary approach to capturing the city of Paris. He photographed everything from grand boulevards and famous landmarks to humble storefronts and alleyways, creating a visual record of the rapidly changing city in the early 20th century. Despite his prolific output, Atget struggled to make a living from his photography, and it was only after his death that his work gained widespread recognition.
