Avon Old Farms School, 500 Avon Old Farms Road, Avon, Hartford County, CT
Summary
Significance: Avon Old Farms School was designed, financed and constructed by architect Theodate Pope Riddle in memory of her father, Alfred Atmore Pope. Pope worked on this project from 1918 until 1929, combining an inventive approach to English Medieval design motifs with an Arts and Crafts sensibility. Still a prestigious boys' preparatory school, Avon Old Farms also was founded to test progressive educational theories that required farm work and other manual labor by the students.
