Bound for a pious community. English (Little Gidding, Huntingdonshire), mid 17th century. Gold-tooled black goatskin, typical of others attributed to the English Protestant community established by Nicholas Ferrar (d. 1637) and his nieces at Little Gidding. Ferrar's community believed that everyone should learn a trade, and many of the women worked on binding sophisticated scrapbooks known as 'Harmonies', of which this is a fine example.
