Brig. Gen. Joane Mathews, Wisconsin’s deputy adjutant general for Army, presents a U.S. flag to Nancy Cunningham, niece of Army Tech 5th Grade John E. Bainbridge, at his funeral held Sept. 29 at Roselawn Memorial Park in Monona, Wis. Bainbridge joined the Wisconsin National Guard’s 32nd Infantry Division in 1940 and was killed in New Guinea Dec. 2, 1942; he rested unknown in Manila American Cemetery until his remains were identified via DNA analysis conducted by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency.
