Abraham Walkowitz was a Russian-born American painter known for his modernist style and his depictions of the human figure in motion. He was born in Tyumen, Russia, in 1878 and immigrated to the United States with his family when he was six years old. He grew up in New York City and studied at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League. Walkowitz was greatly influenced by the work of the French Post-Impressionist painter Paul Cézanne, and his early paintings were characterised by a bold use of colour and a focus on form and structure. He later developed a more abstract style, using bold brushstrokes and simplified forms to create dynamic compositions. One of Walkowitz's most famous works is a series of drawings of the dancer Isadora Duncan, whom he met in 1908. He was captivated by her expressive movements and made hundreds of sketches of her in motion. These drawings became some of his most famous works and helped establish him as a leading figure in modernist art. Throughout his career, Walkowitz continued to explore new techniques and styles, experimenting with different media and subjects. He died in New York City in 1965, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most innovative and influential artists of his time.
