: We are larks. Cant you see that? Being larks wetwitter and warble. Because we twitter and warble weare noisy. The answer of the birds was so cool and impudent thatthe star fairly lost his temper and shouted : You may be larks or any other kind of birds, but youhave no business here. If you want to chirp and twitterin this noisy way, why cant you go down to the earth anddo it! This is the sky and belongs to us, as you oughtvery well to know. But the larks were not sent away so easily, and theybegan to argue the point, saying : We dont know what other birds do, but its theusual custom for larks to warble in a high altitude andtherefore our name is written in Chinese characters as* sparrows of the clouds ! You grumble about oursinging, but how about your own conduct, you sleepycreatures idling away your time and sleeping all daylong ? If you dont like what we say and it makesyour cross why dont you get up and sparkle a little andshow that you are stars and can really shine as you boast

« THE VENERABLE OLD COMET AT LENGTH AROSE THE FALLEN COMET loi you can? You might be bits of dull lead for all thatwe can see ! This impertinent speech so infuriated the star thathe began to twinkle fiercely and emit little flashes ofbrilliant light, but the larks were not at all frightenedat the stellar rage; on the contrary, they retaliatedby flying round, twittering more vociferously than everand said : Pooh ! whos afraid of what the stars say ? How canthe stars hurt us when they darent even go out in thedaytime ? So the naughty mischievous larks went on flying roundand round just as they pleased, delighted at the idea oftormenting the stars, who they knew were powerless byday, and the noise of their singing only grew louder, andthe stars behind the clouds began to give up all hope ofrest that day.
