description

Summary

summary: On 14 September 1984, Vernon L. Souders provided the following identification: Left to right: MacWorthy, a friend of the family; Laura Helen (Thomas) Burrow (1860-1943); Cora Anna Burrow (1881-1945) with her red chair; Herman Thomas Burrow (1854-1941). The person on the wagon was thought to be one of Butcher's friends, as he is not part of the family. Souders further identifies the photograph, "Sod house located on hill in NW1/4 Sec. 30, T. 18N, R. 21W about 2 1/4 miles NW of present town of Merna, Nebraska. Cora born Apr. 1881 and appears to be 5-6 years old, which would confirm Butcher's date of 1886 (poss. late Sept. to early Nov. from looks of grass & MacWorthy's jacket) View is to the NE and the valley in background was where the CB&Q RR was built in 1886. The old town of Merna (possibly in the process of being moved about the time this picture was taken, was about 1 1/2 mi. south of this soddy. This homestead was entered in 1882." Note that Souders refers to the location of the OLD townsite of Merna as 1 1/2 miles south of the soddy, and the NEW townsite was 2 1/4 miles south and west of it.
