Burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia) nest and roost in burrows, like those excavated by prairie dogs. Because they live in open grasslands rather than forests, they have developed long legs that enable these little owls to sprint as well as fly when hunting. Unlike other owls, burrowing owls are active during the day (diurnal). However, they do most of their hunting from dusk until dawn, like other owls.
