For more information see scr1c:27.[CR]Image reproduced in John Kemble's book, "San Francisco Bay: A Pictorial Maritime History," p. 146, with the following information: "Two old stagers at the Pacific Mail wharf, about 1873....The vessel at the right is CALIFORNIA, built in 1848, and the inaugurator of the Panama to San Francisco service in 1849. When this picture was taken, she had been considerably rebuilt and was in the trade between San Francisco and San Diego. To the left of CALIFORNIA is SENATOR, also a '49'er, having come from service on the Maine coast that year. She was first employed in the Sacramento River trade with great success, but from 1855 until 1882, she engaged in coasting voyages, mainly from San Francisco to San Diego. The two vessels dimly seen at the left have not been identified. J. Porter Shaw Collection."
