We are not to write here the history of that famous expedition northat of its heroic members, but it is apropos to note the niggardly appro-priation of Congress (same as in later years) and compare it with the wideopen letter of President Jefferson to Captain Meriwether Lewis. The letter on following paga from President Thomas Jefferson to Cap-tain Lewis explains itself There is no limit to expensesor directions what to do. Iseems to say: Go, find a routeto the Pacific and send me thebill. They went, they found theroute that is traveled over to-day, and one of their numberfound the Yellowstone Park:JOHN COLTER!The first white man to enter thatland of wonders now called theYellowstone Park was John Col-ter, who passed through its easternborders in 1807, where he found atar spring and theStinking Water;the tar spring is calledColters Hell to thisday, but the Stink-ing Water fortu-nately became theShoshone River.
