Canadian army Cpl. Michael Kenacan, a combat engineer with the 39th Combat Engineer Regiment, pulls his squads assault boat onto the shore at Gyro Beach here Aug. 18 during the assault boat portion of the “Best Sapper” skills competition. The competition between the combined US and Canadian squads included an assault boat race, a 6.5 km (4.03 mile) road march, an engineer task evaluation, a field medical evaluation and a live fire range exercise. The competition was a refresher course of the skills the engineers will need to complete this weeks 36 hour field training exercise, the comprehensive training event of Kootenay Castor 2012. Kootenay Castor is a two week combined training exercise for combat engineers from the Washington Army National Guard and the Canadian army.
