description

Summary

Significance: A new Keeper's Dwelling (HABS NC-189-A), with detached Summer Kitchen, was constructed at the Cape Lookout Light Station in 1907. Built of wood frame construction, and resting today on a poured-in-place concrete foundation with a concrete floor, the Summer Kitchen was a small, two-room building, with the larger square room serving as a kitchen and the smaller rectangular room used as a wood shed. In 1933, an 80-foot tall radio tower was built adjacent to the Summer Kitchen. The Summer Kitchen was converted to a Radio House, with the larger room housing transmitters and generators, and the smaller room used for battery storage. In 1949, a second, 120-foot tall radio tower was added, although both towers were demolished by 1960. In 1958, the 1907 Keeper's Dwelling was moved to a location approximately one mile south. In 2018, the Summer Kitchen was being used for storage.
