Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center urology chief and robotic surgeon, Maj. Tara Ortiz, initially wanted to be an orthopaedic surgeon, but chose urology after observing a bladder procedure. The former medic realized her passion for patient care during her deployment to Afghanistan working with a Forward Surgical Team. After finishing her enlistment, the native Californian attended medical school at the University of Pittsburgh.
