Cattails (Typha) on the prairie, George Washington Birthplace National Monument, 2014.
Summary
Cattails like to grow in fresh, rather than salt water. You can witness this behavior at the monument at Dancing Marsh; bulrushes grow to the height of the saltwater tides and are replaced by freshwater-loving cattails above the reach of the tide.
