Chain Bridge spanned the Potomac River in northwest Washington near Tenleytown. The crossing was heavily defended by earthworks (Fort Ethan Allen and Fort Marcy across the Potomac in Virginia and several artillery batteries on the high ground in Washington DC, including Kemble, Parrott, and Vermont.
