Summary

The cattle market on North Circular Road in Dublin taken from a high PoV by Robert French. This landscape was well known to Joyce and at least one of the buildings in view was mentioned in "Ulysses" (along with most of the rest of Dublin)! Here it is nice and clean, but those of us who remember it in full swing will have very different memories of it :-)..Lots of excellent input (and puns) on this image, with nearly too many contributors to thank. In short however, the community has been able to refine the 20-year range to perhaps a few years between the electrification of the trams (c.1898) to when the Aughrim Street parish church was extended (c.1902). The "today" image from Google Maps ( https://www.google.ie/maps/@53.356365,-6.2950246,48a,20y,106.47h,82.69t/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=en ) also really emphasises how much the area has changed since this image of the Dublin Livestock Market ('Cowtown') ( http://www.independent.ie/business/farming/cowtown-revisted-recalling-dublin-livestock-market-34334548.html ) was captured..... ...Photographer: Robert French..Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection ( http://catalogue.nli.ie/Collection/vtls000313414 ) ..Date: Catalogue range c.1880-1900. Though likely c.1898-1902 (as tram lines look electrified but church not yet enlarged)..NLI Ref: L_ROY_08909 ( vtls000041136 ) ..You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie ( http://catalogue.nli.ie )
