Scope and content: This file unit consists of correspondence related to the twin lighthouses at Chatham Light in Chatham, Massachusetts received by Benjamin Lincoln, Henry Dearborn and Henry A. S. Dearborn, in their capacities as Superintendents of Massachusetts Lighthouses, collateral to serving as the first three Collectors of the Port of Boston. The correspondence relates to plans for building the lighthouses, expenses for construction and supplies, the appointment of lighthouse keepers, and plans to move one of the lighthouses. Included are letters from Treasury Secretary Albert Gallatin, Customs Collector Daniel Coffin, and Lighthouse Keepers Samuel Nye and Joseph Loveland.
