an, and learned his true sex only on consulting a physician forsterility. It is always better, in case of doubt, to regard the sex as masculineand to clothe and educate the individual as a male. There are many degrees of masculine pseudo-hermaphroditism, from asimple enlargement of the vesicula prostatica, without abnormality of theexternal genitals, to the full development of a uterus masculinus, dividedinto corporeal and cervical portions, with perfect tubes and a vagina open-ing externally into a uro-genital cleft. In the latter case the penis isrudimentary and there is hypospadias; the urethra opens by a separatecanal at the uro-genital cleft; there is a rudimentary development of thescrotal halves, and the testicles may be in the abdominal cavity. Thevasa deferentia empty usually in the urethra, sometimes in the uro-genitalcleft, and rarely in the cavity of the vesicula. The character of the bodyapproaches the female type closely in well-marked cases of masculine pseudo- Fig. 53.
