COAST GUARD ICE PATROL - ATLANTIC

description

Summary

Davis Straits, Between Canada and Greenland (June 5)--Coast Guard Cutter Healy's stern snakes a path of broken ice in its wake off the open ocean between Canada and Greenland. The Healy, the first polar capable Coast Guard icebreaker built since the 1970s is the largest in the fleet at 420 feet and 16,000 tons. Launched in 1998, the icebreaker employs the power to brake 4.5 feet of ice at three knots continuously -- or up to eight feet by ramming. The Coast Guard spearheads the International Ice Patrol by deploying icebreakers such as the Healy into both Polar circles for support and scientific missions. USCG photo by PA3 Jaime Bigelow
