Concrete Marker to the Completion of Peter Lee's Road
Summary
Crater Rim Historic District. This concrete marker, inscribed "AUG 1887", may be a monument to the completion of Peter Lee's road. The 3-foot-high marker is located by the Crater Rim Drive across from the original site of the Volcano House.
Its placement is undocumented, but it was around that time that a hotelier named Peter Lee built a road from Pahala to the Volcano House. The estimate for the road's completion comes from a Volcano House entry dated October 1888, when a guest claimed to be the first visitor to travel from ocean port to volcano entirely by wheeled conveyance.
