Footes old temperance ship, the Cumberland, wentdown with colors flying, on that historic morning when theMerrimac sallied forth to destroy our fleet at HamptonRoads, and had not yet met the Monitor. The name of Ericsson had not rung round the world then;but It was known in engineering circles as that of an inventorof genius.
